Jameis Winston was benched in the fourth quarter of the Giants' 34-27 loss to the Saints after the Saints scored 34 unanswered points.

Winston had thrown a touchdown as the Giants built a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. But two second-half interceptions contributed to the Saints' run, prompting coach John Harbaugh to make a change.

J.J. McCarthy, acquired via trade following Jaxson Dart's knee injury, entered with only a few weeks in the organization. He led 17 points on the day and brought the Giants to the edge of a tie, but the final drive fell short.

Harbaugh made no starter announcement after the game. McCarthy is likely to become the starter soon. The Giants face Houston in Week 7.

Winston said after the game, "What I would love is to just put myself in a better position to execute."
