Connor McDavid delivered a historic performance Thursday night, leading Edmonton past defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina 6-5 in a shootout.
McDavid finished with five points, raising his season total to 31 through 10 games. That output made him the fourth player in NHL history to reach 30-plus points in his first 10 contests of a season and shattered the Oilers franchise mark for most points in the opening 10 games, a record previously held by Wayne Gretzky.
McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for 10 points and factored into all five of Edmonton's regulation goals. McDavid entered the contest averaging 2.8 points per game. The Oilers forced overtime when they scored with less than 90 seconds remaining against a Carolina club widely regarded as the Eastern Conference's best and known for its stingy defensive structure.
"This does not happen very often: he has broken a Wayne Gretzky record," Tyler Yaremchuk said on Daily Faceoff LIVE with Jeff Marek.
