William Contreras has been the driving force behind Milwaukee's postseason dominance, and Friday's 3-2 World Series Game 1 victory over Tampa Bay only added to his October résumé.
The Brewers catcher delivered at the plate with two singles, including a first-inning RBI that set the tone. But his real impact came behind it.
Tampa Bay entered the World Series 11 for 11 on stolen bases this postseason. Contreras ended that perfection in the fifth, cutting down Victor Mesa Jr. at third on an 0-2 pitch. One inning later, he corralled a nasty back-foot slider in the dirt and fired to second, completing an inning-ending double play on Jonathan Aranda.
"The mound visit between us tonight was quite frankly a one-way conversation," reliever Aaron Ashby said. "I was doing the listening."
Contreras has issued 13 challenges this postseason, most among catchers. At 28, he has developed a feel for when pitchers need his voice and when silence works better.
The Brewers, who won 103 games in the regular season, have not lost since Oct. 6 — 18 days ago. They are now three wins from a championship.
Mickey's Angle: Contreras at plus money for World Series MVP is worth a look if you can still find it — his two-way impact is exactly what voters notice.
