The Indianapolis Colts have secured a key piece of their defensive line for the long term. The team agreed to a two-year, $35 million contract extension with defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore on Tuesday, preventing the 2023 fourth-round pick from reaching free agency this spring.
A source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo that the deal, negotiated by agent Kenny Zuckerman, includes a $13 million signing bonus and $22.5 million in new money through 2027. The extension keeps Adebawore under contract through the 2028 season.
The 25-year-old is enjoying a breakout campaign, leading the Colts with four sacks while posting a 23.3% pass rush win rate that ranks first among Indianapolis defensive linemen. He has generated that pressure despite facing double-teams on 78.8% of his pass-rush snaps.
Adebawore had drawn trade interest as an impending free agent, but Indianapolis identified him as a building block for their retooling roster. The Colts have already moved veterans Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner in trades, with speculation continuing around Jonathan Taylor and Josh Downs.
Mickey's Angle: Adebawore's double-team rate makes his production even more impressive; the Colts bet on a rare interior disruptor who creates opportunities for everyone else.
