The New York Jets placed starting nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat on injured reserve Saturday, sidelining him for at least four games with a knee sprain.
The injury is not considered season-ending, and Sweat will be eligible to return November 29 against the Miami Dolphins. He suffered the injury last Sunday and was already ruled out for this week's matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The timing hurts for a Jets run defense allowing 127.7 yards per game, ranking 24th in the NFL. Rookie Darrell Jackson Jr., a fourth-round pick from Florida State, is expected to step into the lineup.
New York's defensive tackle depth is already stretched. David Onyemata remains on injured reserve after core muscle surgery in Week 3. The Jets also promoted Payton Page to the active roster and elevated Quinton Bell from the practice squad.
Sweat, acquired from Tennessee in an offseason trade, has played all seven games this season with 17 total tackles and two tackles-for-loss.
Mickey's Angle: The Jets' run defense was already leaking oil, and losing their 366-pound anchor only makes things worse. Jackson is talented but raw, so expect teams to test the middle early and often until Sweat returns.
