Elias Pettersson is producing at a point-per-game pace for the first time since signing his eight-year, $11.6-million extension in March 2024, but the underlying numbers tell a more complicated story.
The Vancouver center has four goals and 18 points through the club's first 17 games, including a five-game point streak to open the season where he collected eight points. Yet his individual shot generation has cratered to career-low rates across all situations.
His 5v5 shots, shot attempts and expected goals per 60 minutes all represent the worst marks of his career. His individual contributions account for just 17.79% of team shots, 22.27% of shot attempts and 21.28% of expected goals when he is on the ice.
The disconnect stems from an unsustainable 16.9% on-ice shooting percentage at even strength and a personal 16.7% conversion rate, well above his career norm. All four of his goals have come on the power play.
The 2018 Calder Trophy winner posted 39 goals and 102 points in 2022-23, but managed just 15 goals in each of the past two seasons before this current rebound.
Mickey's Angle: The points look tasty, but the process is broken—expect regression unless Pettersson starts generating his own chances again.
