Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn slammed his headset to the turf after a bungled final sequence cost his team a chance at victory against the New York Giants.
The Week 5 contest ended in a 27-27 tie, leaving Washington with a 1-3-1 record. With 50 seconds remaining in overtime and the ball at the Giants' 24-yard line, the Commanders had no timeouts. The snap did not occur until 12 seconds remained, and quarterback Jayden Daniels was tackled with 9 seconds left. Daniels, who played with a brace on his dislocated left elbow suffered in Week 2, remained on the ground for 4 seconds as the clock expired.
First-year offensive coordinator David Blough cited a headset communication cutoff with 15 seconds on the play clock. Guard Chris Paul also stepped on Daniels' foot at the snap, while tight end Ben Sinnott went in motion left to right and back again. Guard Sam Cosmi threw his helmet and kicked a pylon in frustration.
Daniels finished with 199 passing yards, 103 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Blough said, "It's a scar that we will all wear, but we go forward, man." Washington faces the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC.
