Alright, it's Thursday evening and we've got two 7:30 kickoffs worth your time tonight on ESPN and ESPN2. Neither game involves a ranked team, which is exactly where I like to spend my Thursdays.
Florida Atlantic (5-2) at North Texas (5-2) - DATCU Stadium, ESPN
Both clubs sitting at 5-2 makes this a real game. North Texas has some horses: Jahiem White has 116 carries for 861 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground this year, and Tayven Jackson is completing 160 of 221 passes for 2173 yards, 18 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. That's a functional offense.
But the name I'm circling tonight is Ethan Ervin out of Florida Atlantic. Sophomore back, 87 carries, 368 yards, 2 touchdowns on the season. Those aren't eye-popping numbers but watch how he moves in space and how the line sets up for him. Caden Veltkamp has been solid for FAU at 190 of 260, 2084 yards, 18 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions, so the passing game is real. If Ervin gets creases tonight against a North Texas defense playing a meaningful game, pay attention.
Troy (3-4) at James Madison (7-1) - Bridgeforth Stadium, ESPN2
JMU is rolling. George Pettaway has 124 carries for 824 yards and 8 touchdowns. Camden Coleman is managing the game well at 131 of 212, 1567 yards, 14 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. Troy at 3-4 is a long shot here, and Goose Crowder at 102 of 183 for 1162 yards with 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions hasn't been sharp enough to pull upsets on the road.
Which of these two games are you actually watching tonight?
