Three games kicking off in about an hour and change. Here's what I'm watching.
James Madison (7-0) at App State (4-2) — 7:00 PM, ESPNU
JMU is the headliner nobody's panicking about yet because they don't have a ranking to defend. Camden Coleman at James Madison has been clean: 109/173, 1335 yards, 13 TD, 1 INT. That's a real number. George Pettaway at James Madison is carrying the load at 109 car, 767 yards, 7 TD.
But the reason I'm tuning in early is the App State backfield. Jaquari Lewis is a sophomore and he's at 70 carries, 346 yards, 8 touchdowns. Eight. That's not a fluke line. Sam Pickett III, also a sophomore for App State, has 26 rec, 411 yards, 4 TD on the outside. Malachi Singleton at App State is managing it well at 113/169, 1429 yards, 7 TD, 2 INT. App State at home in Boone is a different animal than their road record suggests.
Liberty (5-1) at Kennesaw State (1-5) — 7:00 PM, CBSSN
Kennesaw State is the kind of program I keep tabs on. Rickie Collins is doing double duty: 129/184, 1302 yards through the air and 64 car, 271 yards, 5 TD on the ground. That's a workload. Not sure it matters tonight against a Liberty defense that's been holding things together.
East Carolina (3-3) at Memphis (5-2) — 7:30 PM, ESPN2
Jaylin Carter at Memphis is the sophomore I'd build a segment around if I still had a press box. 112 carries, 780 yards, 8 TD. Consistent, not flashy. ECU has to account for him or this gets uncomfortable fast.
Which of these three games do you think produces the biggest surprise tonight?
