Brothers and sisters, it's Wednesday evening and the books have already been busy this week. Here's what the injury reports and line moves are telling us before Sunday.
Patriots at Bears — Thu Oct 22, 8:15 PM ET (Prime Video)
Both clubs are on a short week, 4 days rest each. Bears RB Kyle Monangai (Monangai, Bears) is ruled out with a toe injury, per ESPN. The spread opened CHI -1.5 and sits at CHI -3 now, and the total went from 47.5 to 50.5. That's a notable jump in expected scoring for a short-week Thursday game at Soldier Field, 61 degrees and clear.
What it means for you: When a total climbs on a short week, the market is pricing in more offense somewhere; the over got more expensive as it moved, so you're not getting the same value you would have at open.
Browns at Titans — Sun Oct 25, 1:00 PM ET (CBS)
This one flipped. Titans opened as -2.5 home favorites and Cleveland is now a -1.5 road favorite. Total dropped from 40.5 to 37.5. Titans WR Calvin Ridley (Ridley, Titans) is questionable with a hip. Browns RB Quinshon Judkins (Judkins, Browns) is questionable with an ankle. The news behind the spread flip isn't fully spelled out in the reports yet, but that total drop tells its own story: when playmakers are banged up on both sides, the market expects fewer points, and chasing the under after it's already fallen means you're paying the worst price of the week.
What it means for you: A total that drops reflects the market expecting fewer points scored; if you want the under, you already missed the best price.
Buccaneers at Panthers — Sun Oct 25, 1:00 PM ET (Fox)
Another full flip. Tampa opened -1.5 and Carolina is now -3 at home. Baker Mayfield (Mayfield, Buccaneers QB) is questionable with a thumb injury, per the ESPN injury report. Panthers LB Jaelan Phillips (Phillips, Panthers) is questionable with a hamstring; ESPN reports the Panthers are preparing to play without him. The spread landed right on 3, which is one of those numbers that matters more than most in the NFL.
What it means for you: In the NFL, 3 and 7 are the margins many games land on, so a line sitting right on 3 means that half point from book to book carries real weight; shop every book you have access to.
Bengals at Ravens — Sun Oct 25, 1:00 PM ET (CBS)
Biggest story of the week. Baltimore opened -3.5 at home and Cincinnati is now -1.5 on the road. The total dropped from 52.5 to 48.5. Lamar Jackson (Jackson, Ravens QB) is questionable with an ankle injury. ESPN reports Jackson returned to practice but was favoring the ankle walking into the facility. Bengals are coming off 14 days rest off a bye. The spread crossed through 3 on the way over.
What it means for you: When the favorite flips, the market is saying it now thinks the other team has the edge today; the bet you would have made at open is a different bet now, usually tied to quarterback health.
What are you all watching most closely heading into Sunday — the Mayfield thumb or the Jackson ankle?
