Good evening. Two MAC games kicking off tonight and I want to put a few names in front of you before they start.
Ohio at Akron - 7:00 PM EST, ESPN2
Ohio comes in at 6-2, Akron at 1-7, so on paper this looks like a mismatch. But Akron has a couple of young players I keep coming back to. QB Brayden Roggow (Akron) is 112/190 with 1343 yards, 7 TDs and 9 INTs on the season. The interceptions are real and they hurt, but he's getting reps and that matters at this stage. WR Marcel Williams (Akron) is his main target - 34 catches, 375 yards, 3 TDs. Both are ones to file away.
For Ohio, Riley Neer is the name. 37 catches, 497 yards, 5 TDs on the season. Good hands, good routes. Nick Poulos runs that offense at 58/98 for 781 yards and 6 TDs. Ohio should win this one, but watch how Roggow responds under pressure.
Buffalo at Miami (OH) - 8:00 PM EST, ESPN
This is the better game on paper. Both teams sit at 5-3. The player I really want people to see is David McComb (Miami (OH)). Freshman QB, 65/103, 1121 yards, 7 TDs, 1 interception. That TD-to-INT ratio is the kind of line that makes you lean forward. Buffalo's Jason Wright (Buffalo) counters at 92/185, 987 yards, 7 TDs, 4 INTs. Messiah Burch (Buffalo) gives them a ground game - 151 carries, 845 yards, 5 TDs.
Two games, four young QBs worth tracking. Which of tonight's freshmen or sophomores do you think has the best shot at being a name we're all talking about in two years?
