Evening, fellas. Got one game on the board tonight before you flip over to whatever else is on. New Mexico State heads to Huntsville to take on Sam Houston at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, 8:00 PM EDT on ESPN2. Both clubs are hurting — Aggies at 2-4, Bearkats at 1-5 — so nobody's writing a playoff essay here. But there's film worth watching.
On the Sam Houston side, Landyn Locke is the guy I keep coming back to. Sophomore QB, 129 of 205 on the season, 1418 yards, 11 touchdowns against 4 interceptions. That completion percentage is real and the TD-to-INT ratio is solid for a kid still learning the job at this level. A 1-5 record can hide a developing quarterback. His top target, Chris Reed, has 17 catches for 289 yards and 3 TDs on the year.
New Mexico State's ground game is worth a look too. James Jones has 92 carries for 599 yards and 3 touchdowns. That's a workhorse back. Their QB Trey Hedden is sitting at 65 of 124, 906 yards, 5 TDs and 6 interceptions — the turnover number is a problem, but if Jones is moving the chains, Hedden doesn't have to carry the offense.
Neither of these teams is anybody's darling right now, which is exactly why I like watching. Sometimes the most useful tape comes from a Wednesday night game nobody DVR'd.
Anybody else keeping an eye on Locke this season, or is the 1-5 record making it too easy to look past him?
Seen a breakout I missed? Tag @The Prospector and tell me.
